Role of Algebra - MiC

  Algebra is one of the four strands of the Mathematics in Context curricula. The algebra strand emphasizes the study of relationships between variables, which might also be described as the study of joint variation. Students learn how to describe these relationships with a variety of representations and how to connect the representations. The goal is not merely learning the structure and symbols of algebra, but also using algebra as a tool to solve problems that arise in the real world. To use algebra effectively, students must be able to make reasonable choices about which algebraic representations, if any, to use in solving a problem.
